The work of PATH is guided by six principles reflecting both the ethics of psychology and our commitment to responsible public service.

We recognize that questions surrounding non-human intelligence remain the subject of ongoing scientific inquiry and public discussion. PATH neither promotes nor dismisses specific claims. We are committed to following credible evidence wherever it leads while maintaining intellectual honesty, curiosity, and appropriate scientific skepticism.
2. Psychological Preparedness
History consistently demonstrates that thoughtful preparation reduces unnecessary suffering. Just as psychologists prepare communities for disasters, trauma, and other large-scale crises, PATH seeks to prepare society for the psychological implications of a potential paradigm-changing disclosure should one ever occur.
3. Compassion Before Fear
Periods of profound uncertainty require empathy, emotional stability, and compassionate leadership. PATH encourages responses grounded in understanding rather than panic, division, or sensationalism.
4. Transparency with Responsibility
Information capable of significantly affecting humanity should, whenever possible, be communicated thoughtfully, ethically, and with careful attention to its psychological impact. Responsible communication promotes resilience, trust, and social stability.
5. Global Collaboration
Questions concerning humanity's place in the universe transcend national, political, religious, and cultural boundaries. PATH welcomes collaboration among psychologists, researchers, educators, healthcare professionals, ethicists, policymakers, and responsible organizations throughout the world.
6. Professional Integrity
PATH exists to advance psychological preparedness—not to advocate predetermined conclusions regarding the existence of non-human intelligence. Our commitment is to psychological science, ethical practice, and the well-being of humanity regardless of where future evidence ultimately leads.
Why This Matters
Every generation encounters events that redefine history.

The September 11 attacks.
The COVID-19 pandemic.
Each reminded us that preparation matters.
Should humanity someday confront credible information that fundamentally changes our understanding of ourselves and our place in the universe, psychologists will be called upon not to determine whether the evidence is true, but to help people understand, integrate, and adapt to its psychological consequences.
That responsibility belongs to our profession.
Preparing for such a possibility is no more unusual than preparing for other low-probability, high-impact events that have shaped modern society.
Preparedness is one of psychology's greatest contributions to public well-being.
